Plated hardware has one predictable failure mode: the plating wears at the contact points and the base metal starts to corrode from underneath. Stainless has no plating to lose. Scratches stay bright, and the alloy that resists rust is the same alloy all the way through.
304 suits everyday bags. 316, with molybdenum added, holds up in salt water, chlorine and chemical exposure — the choice for marine, diving and outdoor products. Tell us the end use and we will recommend the grade rather than sell you the more expensive one by default.
